ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND EMPLOYMENT
GENERATION SCHEMES As the
local Bengali population is basically from Vaishnava tradition and
very pious, it is easy to encourage local people to become devotees
of the Lord by offering them educational facilities, a decent
maintenance and a suitable occupation. Some years ago H. H.
Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Goswami, head of Bhaktivedanta Institute and
ISKCON GBC for Tripura, promoted the opening of three schools (Sri
Krishna Mission School); the one in Agartala has about 1500
students, from kindergarten to class X. Besides the employment
opportunities offered by the new construction project, the Prasadam
restaurant and the guesthouse, the publication department and so on,
we are starting to develop the production of spiritual gifts, like
devotional clothes, malas, incense, and other items.
Furthermore, after the completion of the Sri Sri Radha Govinda
Mandir (situated in town), it will be possible to start a farm
project with a goshala, flower and vegetable gardens, bee-hives and
other farming activities, together with a vocational training
center. These development schemes will greatly help the
community to appreciate the preaching of Krishna consciousness,
support the daily worship of the Deities and the celebration of
festivals, allow the publication of transcendental literature and
create a center of spiritual and cultural activities which can
really transform Tripura and set a very good example for India and
the world in general. Please help us to accomplish this important
project.

DEVELOPMENT PLAN
This work was already started in 1997 with the
beginning of the new temple management under Premadata das Harinam
Sankirtana was started with regularity, the standard for Deity
worship was increased and a small Prasadam (food offered to Krishna)
counter with bookshop and a spiritual gifts shop were opened to
support the pujari expenditures. A useful spoken English course was
started. A lot of repair works were done to the old structure of
the temple (composed of bricks, bamboo and tin sheets); a permanent
boundary wall around the property, a new water tank, new toilets and
shower rooms, and a small garden were made. Every Sunday a feast
is offered to the supporting members and guests with video show of
devotional cassettes, and occasionally a larger Prasadam
distribution to the needy is organized. Patron life member
enrollment has been encouraged, together with other schemes as
Madhukari (small monthly donations from merchants), Sudama Seva
Sankalpa (foodstuffs donations), temple ceremonies sponsorship and
so on. The construction of the new complex will enable the
opening of a first class Prasadam restaurant with guesthouse, so
that devotees from all over the world can come and visit to give
encouragement and enlightenment to the local people. Of course,
they will also encourage even ordinary people who will come to
ISKCON restaurant and the guesthouse to appreciate Krishna’s
Prasadam and the association of devotees.

THE STATE OF
TRIPURA
Tripura became a
part of Indian Union after the independance struggle, in the same
period with Manipur and other North-Eastern states. Geographically,
it is sorrounded for three quarters by Bangladesh and for one
quarter by the indian regions of Assam and Mizoram, the capital city
Agartala is situated at about 50 minutes airflight from Calcutta.
The land route is not very practical, as it must run around
Bangladesh instead of just crossing it. This fact has crippled the
economic and cultural development of Tripura, created heavy
unemployment and social and ethnic unrest, especially in the tribal
areas in the north and south. The weather is temperate and there is
no scarcity of rain. Tripura is covered with tea gardens and
beautiful forests, especially on the hills, and it is famous for its
production of and bamboo (including edible bamboo shoots and sticks
for incense production), citronella oil, rice, pineapple, jackfruit
and licies. However, its resources are not yet utilized in a proper
way for lack of good managing and cooperation among communities. The
original population is composed of various native tribes of
mongolian race, but in the XVIII century the King of Tripura asked a
group of Bengalis to come and settle in his kingdom in order to
develop the agriculture and economy. The present Bengali community
lives mainly in the capital Agartala; many of their components are
from Vaishnava families and practice Harinam Sankirtana, Ratha Yatra
and traditional festivals. A relatively large Manipuri community is
present in the area, as the royal family of Tripura is linked with
the royal family of Manipur. The temple of Sri Sri Radha Govinda can
act as a real catalyzer to bring spirituality, culture, peace and
prosperity to the whole area.

THE SHASTRAS
SAY... "The constructor
of a temple of Sri Madhava can eternally reside in Vaikuntha. He who
offers a beatiful garden full of fruits and flowers to Lord Sri
Krishna achieves heavenly pleasure. Those who construct a Vishnu
temple deliver eight generations of their ancestors from their
sufferings in hellish planets." (Vamana Purana) "A person who
builds a temple of Sri Vishnu will get the same results as
performing the Rajasuya Yajña and Ashvamedha Yajña. As many atoms
are there in the temple so built, for so many thousands of years
will he be able to reside in the heavenly planets." (Vishnu
Dharmottara) "Just by starting the construction of a temple for
Lord Krishna, sins committed in seven births will be wiped out."
(Skanda Purana) "One who builds or helps to build a beautiful
temple for the Lord will be freed from all sinful reactions and will
enter the Vaikuntha planets.” (Narasimha Purana) "One who offers
the Deity gifts of land, markets, cities and villages so that the
regular daily worship and special festivals of the Deity may go on
continually will achieve opulence equal to My own." (Srimad
Bhagavatam) YOU ARE ALL INVITED TO PARTECIPATE TO THIS GREAT
PROJECT AND TO JOIN THE OPENING CEREMONY! |
